The 54th annual Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters’ Association Convention will kick off Sunday with a memorial service at Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, 15 Earl Stoyer Drive, Schuylkill Haven.
The convention is hosted by Schuylkill Haven Liberty Fire Company No. 4, which is also celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The theme is “100 Years of Liberty,” Convention Chairman Leroy Boyer, of the Liberty Fire Company, said.
Boyer is also sports editor for The REPUBLICAN & Herald.
“We wanted to make sure we honored and tied in the past with the present and future,” Boyer said.
Schuylkill Haven last hosted the convention in 2000, when the borough celebrated its 250th anniversary.
Boyer said the major award to be given at the Aug. 23 parade will be the 6-foot-tall Glenn Sattizahn Memorial Trophy for “Best Overall Fire Service Entry.” Sattizahn was the Liberty Fire Company chief from 1962 to 1968, and was assistant borough chief from 1962 to 1981. His son, Glenn, is now Schuylkill Haven Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief. His grandson, Glenn Jr., also volunteers and is a paid firefighter in Harrisburg.
All past chiefs will also be invited as special guests to the Wednesday Delegates Night meeting.
Schuylkill Haven’s three fire stations will host an open house Aug. 21. The Schuylkill Hose Company No. 2 station, at St. Peter and East Union streets, has been rebuilt after a September 2007 fire in which it lost both its engines and a hazmat truck.
Nearly 250 units have pre-registered for the parade, Boyer said. Units have been registered from Schuylkill, Berks, Carbon, Dauphin, Lebanon, Luzerne, Lehigh, Montgomery and Northhampton counties.
Schuylkill County has 121 fire companies, high for a Pennsylvania county.
Boyer said the large number of companies comes from the large number of municipalities, many of which have multiple fire companies with different ethnic backgrounds.
Boyer said he was excited about the variety of music in the parade, which will include bagpipes, a drum and bugle corps, a string band and six high school bands from Schuylkill Haven, Tamaqua, Blue Mountain, Pottsville, Nativity BVM and Exeter Township, which is a Reading-area school.
“When Schuylkill Haven’s had a convention in the past, it’s been a lot more than just fire trucks,” Boyer said.
The Aug. 23 parade will be preceded by a Schuylkill Haven Lions Club pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Schuylkill Haven Area High School cafeteria. On-site registration for the parade will be from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Line-up will begin near the high school, and the 2-mile parade route will end on Columbia by the Liberty Fire Company station. Several town business owners will have food stands set up along the parade route.
