LAKE WYNONAH - Authorities have identified the man killed in a Friday night fire in Lake Wynonah, and state police fire investigators continue looking into the cause of the massive blaze in the gated Wayne Township community about 10 miles south of Pottsville.
Richard W. Zimmerman, 66, of 562 Coyote Drive, was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. Friday. His body was found in a room adjacent to the garage, near an exit, authorities said. The initial Schuylkill County Communication Center reports incorrectly identified the address of the fire at 511 Coyote Drive.
Zimmerman "died of inhalation of carbon monoxide and smoke," Schuylkill County Coroner Joseph Lipsett told The Republican-Herald in a phone message Saturday.
Lipsett said the death has been classified as "accidental" following an autopsy performed Saturday by Forensic Pathologist Dr. Richard Bindie.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. State police fire marshals Trooper John Burns and Trooper Mark Demko were at the scene late Friday night investigating.
Neither Burns nor Demko could be reached for comment Saturday.
The blaze drew fire companies from across Schuylkill County, including crews from Summit Station, Schuylkill Haven, Cressona, Pine Grove and elsewhere. A company from Berks County also responded to the scene.
As firefighters raced to the burning home about 6 p.m. Friday, a Republican-Herald reporter and photographer were denied entrance to the community by a security guard at the front gate.
In an e-mail to The Republican-Herald on Saturday, Lake Wynonah Property Owners Association President Paul Lund said the association will revisit the policy of not allowing media to enter the community during fires.
"Security procedure is to only allow members and guests into the community," Lund said in the e-mail. "However, the board will discuss this situation."
